A Farm-Fresh Remedy: Honey Cough Syrup Recipe

Nov 01, 2024

At Kitako Lake Honey, we know firsthand the power of nature’s remedies. Growing up on this Saskatchewan farm, I saw how honey was a staple for everything from sweetening tea to soothing a sore throat. My family has been producing pure local honey for two generations, and we continue to rely on it during cold and flu season.
My mom used to mix up a homemade cough syrup with honey whenever someone had a runny nose, cough, or sore throat. Now, I’m sharing a version of that recipe with you. This simple, effective remedy combines Kitako Lake Honey, ginger, turmeric, and lemon to naturally calm your cough and boost your immune system.

Why honey is perfect for cold and flu season

As a young chap, this cough syrup was a coveted treat I was only allowed to have if I was sick—a silver lining to feeling crappy! If we didnt have any syrup ready on hand, sometimes I’d be given a plain-old spoonful of pure honey instead. Yum! But honey isn’t just sweet and yummy—it’s packed with antioxidants and antimicrobial properties that actually help your body fight off sickness. Honey coats the throat, reducing irritation and suppressing coughing. Our Sask-made honey is raw and unprocessed, meaning it retains more of these natural powerful healing properties.

Recipe: Kitako Lake Cough Syrup with Honey, Ginger, Turmeric and Lemon

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup Kitako Lake Honey – straight from the hive, full of natural healing power.
1 tablespoon fresh ginger – great for easing congestion and throat pain.
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder– reduces inflammation and boosts the immune system.

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice– loaded with vitamin C to break up mucus.
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar– supports respiratory health and helps break up congestion.
A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) – adds warmth and helps clear sinuses.

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1
Slightly warm the honey in a saucepan over low heat, but don’t let it boil—this is very important to preserving the medical properties of the honey.
STEP 2
Add the grated ginger, turmeric, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar. Stir until all ingredients are well combined.
STEP 3
Let the mixture cool and strain if desired. Store in a jar in the fridge for up to a week.

DOSAGE
Take 1 teaspoon every few hours for cough relief and throat soothing. Hold it in your mouth and swallow slowly to let it coat your throat.
